Catholic Priest beaten by Police in Kerala, India

Alappuzha (Kerala, India), SVM News, November 21, 2007: Roman Catholic Priest was beaten by a Deputy Superintendant of Police (DySP) on November 21 in Alappuzha Town in Kerala, India.

Rev. Father Edward Puthanpurackal was beaten and pushing down by DySP A. Krishnam Kutty on Wednesday before noon. Father fell on the road.

Five Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) activists also were beaten by the police.

Father Edward and KCYM activists was planning to have a new form of strike by rolling on the road from Shavakkotta bridge to Alappuzha Collectorate against not finishing the works of Chethi Bridge.

"Police told them not to allow strike by rolling on the road, but procession. Father Edward and KCYM activists still tried to goahead with their decision." An official told to the Salem Voice Ministries (SVM) News Service.

"KCYM organising another major rally towards Alappuzha North Police station against beating priest," a KCYM member told to SVM News.

Paul Ciniraj, President of the Christian Ministers of the Churches in India (CMCI) condemned the incident
