Satna (Madhya Pradesh in India), SVM News, July 23, 2007: Four social workers of a Christian missionary institution were allegedly beaten up by masked assailants at Satna in Madhya Pradesh State in India on July 18.
The workers of Karunalaya (House of Mercy), a Delhi-based voluntary organisation running the orphanage and offering services to the poor were attacked with sticks and severely injured, police officials said to the Salem Voice Ministries (SVM) News Service.
The injured Christian social workers were identified as Johan, Ajish, Xavier and Samuel.
Around 14 masked men arrived by five motorcycles on Wednesday evening at the Karunalaya Christian institution and attacked them.
Senior police officers went to the scene and rushed the injured to the District Hospital. A case has been registered against the unidentified assailants and attempts were on to trace them.
"Though the cause of attack was not known, police did not rule out the involvement of some communal organisation," Amit Saxena, the city police superintendent said.
The Christian communities expressed anguish over the incident and sought police protection from the Superintendent of Police Kamal Singh Rathore.
Rev. Paul Ciniraj, the national president of the Christian Ministers of the Churches of India (CMCI) condemned the attack towards Karunalaya Institution and asked the government to find out and arrest the attackers immediately.
Earlier also, Christian community workers were assaulted at Jabalpur and other places in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh allegedly by Bajrang Dal workers.
